Welcome, Friend !

If you are reading this, it is likely that you are unfamiliar with Hughes.  Welcome! We hope that you will join us in worship. We encourage you to explore our web site and discover for yourself what Hughes United Methodist Church is doing in the name of our Lord and Savior.

What to Expect in a Worship Service

Three worship services are held most Sundays: An Informal Service at 9:00 a.m.; a Traditional Service at 10:30 a.m. and a service in Spanish (El Buen Samaritano) at 12 Noon.

For the Informal service we usually gather in the front area of the sanctuary, nearest the altar. Although no formal liturgy guides the order of service, there is time each week for greeting, music, prayer, scripture and the pastor’s message. Music, led by a small instrumental ensemble, is generally contemporary and upbeat with words of the songs projected on a screen. Prayers and the message are conversational, with the pastor often asking for input, feedback and experiences from the worshipers. Dramas and videos are often used to illustrate the message.

The traditional service is guided by a more formal order of service. The basic pattern of worship is Gathering and Praise, Hearing the Word, Responding to the Word and Going Forth into the World. Congregational singing, led by our magnificent pipe organ, is from The United Methodist Hymnal. During the gathering time we center our hearts on God’s presence through a weekly prayer thought as the organist plays a prelude from the standard organ repertoire. During the time of praise we offer thanks to God in words of welcome, hymns, prayers and musical offerings. The word is proclaimed through scripture readings and the pastor’s formal sermon, although drama and video are often used to illustrate the message of the day. We respond to God’s word proclaimed through the prayers of the people, receiving an offering and/or celebrating the sacraments of baptism and communion. A hymn and blessing send us into the world to reflect the face of Christ and share God’s message of love and grace with our words, deeds and lives.

Holy Communion is usually celebrated on the first Sunday of the month (at all three services) and other special occasions. The United Methodist Church practices an open communion table. Anyone present at worship who is a follower of Jesus Christ or desires to commit his/her life to following his teachings, is welcome to receive. Grape juice is used in place of wine.

Reception of Members

New members are periodically received into membership in Hughes United Methodist Church-El Buen Samaritano at a worship service on Sunday morning. Members may join by profession of faith, by letter of transfer from another United Methodist Church, or reaffirmation of faith with a letter of transfer from a church in another denomination. If you are interested in uniting with Hughes United Methodist Church, please contact one of the pastors through the church office so that a time can be set to meet together. The purpose of this time together is to help us become acquainted with each other, answer any questions you may have about the Christian faith, our congregation and the denomination, and to set a day when you will officially join the church. We look forward to welcoming you as a member of our church family.
